USA Physical Map Poster: Mountains, Rivers and Landscapes of the 48 States

Our USA physical map poster shows the United States as it really looks from above, from the forested Appalachians in the east to the snow-capped Rockies and the deserts of the south west. Natural colours and detailed shaded relief bring the mountains, plains, valleys and coastlines of the 48 contiguous states to life, making it a striking piece for any wall.

What the USA physical map shows

Rather than focusing on borders and roads, this map puts the land itself centre stage. More than 3,000 labels pick out mountain ranges, peaks, rivers, lakes, canyons, plateaus and basins, from the Cascade Range and the Sierra Nevada to the Great Plains, the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. A scattering of major cities and faint state lines are included for reference without getting in the way of the terrain. Please note the map covers the 48 contiguous states only, so Alaska and Hawaii are not included.

Who designed this map

The map was created by Tom Patterson, the respected cartographer behind the Natural Earth project and many of the US National Park Service’s maps. He worked through atlases, USGS topographic maps and a wide range of other sources to choose which features to include, then refined the design with suggestions from map enthusiasts across the country. The result is one of the most detailed and good-looking physical maps of the USA you will find.

A USA physical map poster for home, office or classroom

It makes a lovely gift for anyone who loves the outdoors, has a road trip across America on their wish list, or has fond memories of a visit to the national parks. It works just as well in a study, office or classroom, where the natural colour palette helps show how the climate and landscape change from coast to coast.
