Modified Gall World Projection Map (Environmental-Simple)

The Gall projection, introduced in 1855 by Scottish clergyman James Gall, is a cylindrical map projection designed to address the distortions of traditional projections such as Mercator. Gall presented this projection as a way to provide a more balanced view of the Earth, particularly in representing regions near the poles and the equator more accurately. The projection uses a straightforward mathematical transformation that positions the poles at 45 degrees of latitude, ensuring that the entire globe is represented with reduced shape distortion.

Unlike the Mercator projection, which greatly exaggerates the size of polar regions, the Gall projection compresses these areas while enlarging equatorial regions, offering a compromise between area and shape accuracy. However, this balance also means that some distortion of both area and angles is inevitable, as no flat map can perfectly represent a spherical surface.

Gall’s original work on this projection received limited attention until it was further developed and popularized by cartographers like Arno Peters in the 20th century. The Gall-Peters projection, derived from Gall’s work, became famous for its focus on equitable representation of global regions, especially for emphasizing the size of developing countries. Gall’s contribution thus laid the groundwork for modern discussions about fairness in global mapping.
